Recently I stumbled upon this video the Sims creators came up with as a result of the pending Royal Wedding (only one more day to go if we’re counting down). Let me continue slightly on this hot topic. Not only England has royal fever, it seems global these days (Recently my mom even bought a Kate and William cookie tin and book ;)
Just to give an example of the proportions this wedding has taken on: we here in Belgium have about five bigger Flemish channels and 3 of them (Eén, VT4 en VTM) will be broadcasting the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. To be honest, I do not really see the point, but I guess it gives plenty of experts in relevant domains (stylists, cooks, florists etc.) and of course royalty watchers such as Jan Van den Berghe (on VTM) a chance to have their say. Whether we want to watch or not I do think it might just be inevitable. Nevertheless, I know I am quite curious as to the best kept secret, the dress J
However, with this short video I wanted to introduce the world of The Sims in a relevant context and of course from an angle inspired by popular culture. This angle of popular culture is further demonstrated in the video below.
Here we see the music video of ‘Ballad of Mona Lisa’ by the band Panic! At the Disco in its Sims version. Again it becomes clear that popular culture motivates people to experiment with other types of popular culture. In this particular case people are experimenting with the possibilities of The Sims. On a personal note I have the utmost respect for these creations. This use of popular culture in other forms of popular culture is not uncommon. For example Blink 182 refers to Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) in their song ‘I Miss You’. More precisely they sing the words, ‘We can live like Jack and Sally if you want, where you can always find me, we’ll have Halloween on Christmas, And in the night we’ll wish this never ends’.
However, it was my aim with this short article to entice you to read my upcoming article on The Sims. To me The Sims is popular culture. I will of course elaborate on this in my article. Moreover, the game has a unique ability to suck girls into the gaming world. The short video clips above already illustrate why popular culture is involved and provide clues as to the article without me having to say anything yet!
