Basically, you never know what you are going to find and just looking never hurt anyone. I guess it’s a little like that box of chocolates and there can be pretty great ones ;)

Hence this topic: how awesome is the new Marc by Marc Jacobs store in Brussels?

I am not very brand minded because high street shops such as Zara, H&M etc. also have a wide variety and many options and lines. They focus on trends as well as offering the basics we all need (for example a plain white shirt etc.). Then, there are the, what I call middle of the range brands, such as surfer brands for example Roxy, Billabong, O’ Neill, Esprit, Mexx, Levi’s, Abercrombie etc. 

Following, we have the so called ‘real’ brands like Chanel, Prada, Versace, Valentino, Gucci, Louis Vuitton etc. They obviously have stunning pieces and it is what the high street stores base their fashion lines on but for an average individual, their closet will probably not be bulking with Louboutins or branded clothing. I would probably situate Marc by Marc Jacobs somewhere in between the middle of the range brands leaning towards the ‘real’ fashion brands.

Nevertheless, I personally have always had a weak spot for designer Marc Jacobs (he’s a man to be noticed and I appreciate his ‘laissez faire’ attitude (like: “if you don’t like me who cares, tastes differ, doesn’t mean we can’t be civil”)). His line ‘Marc by Marc Jacobs’ for the younger generation has me fascinated. It only goes to show that Blair in Gossip Girl (pity it’s done) was not so wrong with her B brand. Moreover, the clothes and accessories in these lines seem more ‘affordable’ and ‘wearable’ in comparison with the top of the range brands.

 It probably all started for me with his mouse shoes.

I simply love them (picture above just an example), and that’s all there is to it! These seem reasonable regarding price, considering. To me, they give a playful, youthful touch to many outfits in addition to the fact they wear well. A bit like the Charlotte Olympia kitty flats which are super popular among celebrities right now. Never mind the fact that those sell for around 500 euro a pair, which is quite a bit above my price range. Moreover, I don’t like them as much as I do the Marc by Marc Jacobs mouse flats. Additionally, the handbags, wallets, accessories and clothes are ‘finished’, really original and come in great colours. I love the designs and they are very wearable which is why I love them. (The clothes are a on the pricey side.)

 

Therefore, the first Belgian Marc by Marc Jacobs store, was in my opinion a welcome addition to the Brussels shopping scene. The store of 250 m² with the men, women and children collections can be found on the Rue Dansaert. It also houses the first European Marc Bookstore, Bookmarc. There is a wide variety and I felt that this store was better than the Paris one.  On this street in the centre you also find a Mac store, Bobbi Brown store and many more.

To play or not to play? That is the question ...

Naar aanleiding van het nieuwe GTA spel  dat lente 2013 in de rekken zal liggen leek het mij een goed uitgangspunt om werk te maken van dit artikel.

Eerst en vooral, alvast één van de officiële trailers:

Een tijdje geleden heb ik jullie gezegd dat ik werk ging maken van een artikel waarin de positieve kanten van computerspelletjes spelen aan het licht zouden komen. Gezien het mij ook echt interesseerde en ik aan de levende lijve heb ondervonden dat er toch een kern van waarheid zit in wat ik te vertellen heb, heb ik eindelijk werk gemaakt van dat artikel. Ik kan me namelijk inbeelden dat het voor veel mensen een mysterieuze wereld is, ook al is het tegenwoordig een intrinsiek aspect van de huidige populaire cultuur. De industrie rond spelletjes is momenteel zelfs lucratiever dan Hollywood zelf.

De inspiratie en de theorie waar ik mij persoonlijk wel in kan vinden, is terug te vinden in het boek Everything Bad is Good For You van Steven Johnson. Uiteraard zijn er academici die hier niet mee akkoord gaan, en eerder negatieve kanten benadrukken,  zoals het feit dat ze verslavend kunnen werken, dat er vragen worden gesteld bij de inhoud, dat ze het sociale gebeuren kunnen belemmeren, dat ze duur zijn enz. , maar in dit artikel ga ik daar niet verder op in.

Het is interessant dat zelfs het simpelste computerspelletje ons op een bepaald niveau iets bijbrengt wat de o zo ingeburgerde, literaire wereld niet kan. Uiteraard zorgt een boek voor de overdracht van informatie en lokt het mentale denkcapaciteiten uit. Desalniettemin zal de boekenliefhebber zich tegenwoordig ook bezig houden met andere media: dit hoeven daarom niet noodzakelijk spelletjes te zijn. Daarom zal ik nu de nodige aandacht besteden aan een ander medium en de sterktes daarvan toelichten. Al te snel schrijven we iets af omdat we het niet kennen, ten voordele van datgene waar we wél mee vertrouwd zijn. Het is nog steeds sociaal meer aanvaard de negatieve kanten van computerspelletjes  te zien. Je kan ze uiteraard nog altijd niet aangenaam vinden, maar naar mijn mening is er in dit geval ook geen reden om ze zomaar af te breken. Smaken verschillen, en gelukkig maar!

Uiteindelijk kunnen we al heel wat leren uit het feit dat veel computerspelletjes veel van onze tijd vergen en waarom we er zo graag  tijd aan willen spenderen. Het gaat namelijk veelal gepaard met het nodige gevloek, omdat je niet voorbij een bepaald stuk raakt,  of omdat je de verdere weg niet ziet. Zoals in het boek van Steven Johnson vermeld staat:  ‘Waarom willen we ontsnappen naar een wereld die ons eigenlijk 90% van de tijd irriteert?’ (Ik denk dat we hier allemaal wel een herinnering kunnen ophalen: Ik speel bijvoorbeeld graag Broken Sword en meestal zit ik, eerlijk gezegd, vast maar ik blijf zoeken voor één of andere reden. Als ik dan de weg toch vind ben ik ook wel blij. Het is niet voor niets dat een gids voor het controversiële spel Grand Theft Auto 1.6 miljoen kopies heeft verkocht. Voor Broken Sword durf ik ook soms eens een walkthrough  (stap per stap uitleg bij het spel) te raadplegen.)

Kortom, computerspelletjes leven van ‘uitgestelde gratificatie’. Inderdaad, bij Broken Sword kan ik dit enkel beamen. Hoe lang ik er ook naar moet zoeken, het is uiteindelijk de moeite waard!  Er worden dan ook heel wat cognitieve uitdagingen voorgeschoteld. De kracht van spelletjes om toch onze aandacht te blijven behouden, ligt in het feit dat ze inspelen op het natuurlijke beloningssyteem van de hersenen. Hierbij worden we beloningen ‘beloofd’ en dit moedigt ons aan om deze beloning te bemachtigen. Als je iets niet vind denk je in jezelf ‘ik ga een beetje harder zoeken want het moet hier ergens zijn’. Kortom beloning schuilt overal in deze virtuele wereld. Zelfs bij iets simpels als De Sims. Beloning schuilt in vrienden maken en houden, een reis ondernemen en er een expeditie doen, in een succesvolle carriére enz. Dit is wel de eerste keer dat ik hierover heb, nagedacht maar in mijn geval klopt dit alles! De meeste spelletjes brengen spelers ook op de hoogte als er een beloning kan verdiend worden, en bijvoorbeeld hoeveel er nodig is om een volgend niveau te bereiken. Er worden namelijk allerlei objecten, geld of populariteit weerhouden als je bepaalde beloningen nog niet hebt bereikt. Dit moedigt de speler uiteindelijk ook aan.

Twee van mijn persoonlijke favorieten

Tijdens de spelletjes gaat het dus eerder over de manier waarop je denkt en niet zozeer over hetgeen waarover je denkt. Veel eerder dan bij boeken, films of muziek dwingen computerspelletjes je om  keuzes te maken. We leren uiteindelijk hoe we moeten denken, hoe we de juiste beslissingen kunnen maken en hoe we hierin moeten prioritiseren, kiezen. Geen andere vorm van populaire cultuur engageert op deze manier het beslissing vormende deel van onze hersenen. Sommige van deze beslissingen zijn snel gemaakt en andere zijn weloverwogen lange termijn strategieën.

 Op cognitief niveau is dit evenzeer opmerkenswaardig. Het vergt veel van de mentale capaciteiten van een mens, en dit wordt dikwijls onderschat. De spelers zijn zich namelijk heel bewust van hun doel. Ze hebben dikwijls een ‘te doen’ lijstje dat hun strategie bepaalt. Dit is interessant omwille van het feit dat er veel doelen tegelijkertijd spelen en het feit dat deze in zekere zin georganiseerd worden.  Bovendien zullen op den duur bepaalde zaken een automatisme worden. De kennis wordt geinternaliseerd. Getalenteerde gamers kunnen deze gevarieerde doelen simultaan duidelijk onderscheiden. Het gaat om orde, het aanvoelen van bepaalde dingen en het prioriseren. Je hebt bijgevolg lange termijn visie zowel als korte termijn kunnen nodig. Er worden meer geneugten gehaald uit het spelen zelf dan uit het volgen van het verhaal. Het zou dus fout te zijn te denken dat de intelligentie van spelletjes ligt in hun inhoud, thema’s en karakters. Met andere woorden vergelijking met literaire meesterwerken, televisie of films heeft weinig zin.

Bovendien is het een leerproces waar de regels op voorhand niet zozeer vastliggen. Je leert door te doen en de uiteindelijke sleutel tot geluk voor veel spelers is het ontrafelen van de regels en het verzamelen van beloningen en het uiteindelijk bereiken van het doel. Kort samengevat zou het betekenen dat wanneer spelers interacteren met deze omgeving, ze de basisprocedure leren van wat een wetenschappelijke werkmethode inhoudt.

Hopelijk heb ik, net zoals Steven Johnson, duidelijker kunnen maken dat de niet-literaire populaire cultuur over de voorbije jaren steeds meer uitdagend is geworden, en dat er ook een nog weinig belichte positieve kant aan vast zou kunnen hangen. Zoals ik eerder al zei, kan ik mij volledig vinden in deze gedachtengang. Het is belangrijk, naar mijn mening, om te onthouden dat het spelen van computerspelletjes mentale vaardigheden bevordert die verschillen, en even belangrijk zijn als deze die ontwikkelen door het lezen van boeken.

That was one friend to another while standing in the queue at the movies. It was not much of a surprise that he was going to watch The Expendables 2, just as I was. Even though it is not the movie I would generally go to (not by a long shot), and the actors are far from my favourites, it was an event  that could no longer be ignored in popular culture. It is an unseen reunion of action movie icons among which Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris and Jet Li. There are already plans for a third movie and there have this time been talks with ‘hero’ Steven Segal to join the cast. Let us not forget that in many countries these action heroes are very loved. For example the LA Times wrote, “China's battle of the superheroes ended up being won by ... a group of aging action stars .In a surprising outcome, "The Expendables 2" has outgrossed both "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" in China”. Therefore, this movie with these unlikely heroes, especially for my generation, was worth mentioning in a short review.

                The men, and newly added woman, set out on a mission. During the mission the mercenaries among are double-crossed. They end up discovering that there was an item stolen by Vilain (the villain J Jean-Claude Van Damme). The item was a miniature computer containing the location of a five-ton cache of plutonium that the Russians had stashed in an abandoned mine during the Cold War. Motivated as much by revenge as their realigned mission to prevent Vilain from selling the weapons/nuclear material to a list of willing buyers, the Expendables take off in pursuit of their adversaries. [1] This leads to explosive scenes and many a bullet and punch to be thrown across the screen. My personal favourite moment is when Arnold Schwarzenegger gets into a Smart car and by accident rips the door off when he gets in, upon which he says, “my shoe is bigger than this car”(at least that part at the end it is pretty violent).

 

What these actors have realized throughout recent years with their own individual movies, and what they have come to represent, is in my eyes an own subversive stream within the genre of action movies and within our modern popular culture. The Expendables movies are a projection of what all these stars have come to symbolize, of what we expect and they successfully bring it all together in an explosive big screen movie (with all the modern effects). Sure, there are the clichés and the one liners (“track him, find him, kill him”) we should expect (for example at the end Stallone says, “That plane belongs in a museum” to which Schwarzenegger replies, “We all do.”) , but it works and makes the movie that much more accessible and worth the 103 minutes of our time. Against all odds on IMDB the movie even gets a 7.3 and many people base their choice of whether to watch a movie or not on their opinion.

The Road Not Taken

I do not have a quote, movie or song to live by as I appreciate many movies, quotes and songs. Yet, there is a poem that has stuck with me for many a year now, Robert Frost’s ‘The Road Not Taken’ J. I remember sitting in an 8^th grade English class and we deciphered the poem sentence by sentence. Nevertheless, I appreciate it more now that I’m older because I remember back then it was just work. Either way, it triggered something because now several years down the line it is probably the one poem that managed to make all the difference. It just shows me that popular culture does not always come in the forms we expect it to and that even around the 1920’s the popular culture had elements we can appreciate to this day. It starts me thinking, staying positive (as the world can quickly become something rather depressing) and appreciating life and the curveballs it sends our way. That is also why I wanted to share this poem because everyone can use a bit of enthusiasm in their own way.

Nevertheless, I do not think the poem conveys the two paths as all that different because in the end there is no difference, there is no wrong or right road. There’s probably also more than two ;) Decisions and life-events lead to outcomes that we cannot always predict. Making a decision though is never a bad thing because otherwise life would not really move on and it would be pretty boring J

An important nuance I myself make is that even though some people have chosen another road that does not mean roads cannot intertwine or come together again (like a detour). There will always be people who guide you and are there for you, despite the turns of life. I believe that the people who are meant to be on your journey will be there in one way or another. In the end it’s the people and not the road that makes all the difference.  

 Therefore, just because you might think you are on the road less taken does not mean it is the road not taken or crossed. Even though we might not notice we never have to walk the road alone.  I’m not saying this with a sigh: “I believe Robert Frosts insight conveyed in this poem, as I’ve interpreted it, is a simple truth of life that has the possibility to make all the difference!”

Summer 2012

Although my blog has had a (too long) summer break popular culture has not grinded to a standstill in fact summer 2012 (at least on this side of the world) has had enough things to keep the world fascinated.

Firstly, there were the 30^th Olympic Games in London of which the opening and closing ceremonies gave me all the more reason to love popular culture. With millions of viewers worldwide it was definitely an event that deserved our attention. These ceremonies are in fact intertwined with popular culture and let’s face it, Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony just may have been one of the most entertaining movies of this season. The direction of this event was captivating, smart and entertaining from the beginning to end. Take for instance Britain’s comic the world has come to love doing an act, James Bond (Daniel Craig) escorting the queen to the ceremony or the wonderfully inspired music history sequence.

Secondly, still linked with the Olympic Games we witnessed the probably last performance of the Spice Girls ever. I hate say it but for all the nineties people (at least for me), and I was never even a fan, it was a goosebump moment. Not to mention that they put on an entertaining show and they proved they still had it in them. Too bad their reunion was before and after sometimes overshadowed by petty fights.

 

Thirdly, there was the much awaited release of the third (supposedly final) Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. In 1939, Batman became another much loved American superhero that to this day has not faded from our popular culture. I personally also look forward to that other hero flying onto our screens again in 2013, Superman. Despite all the hard work Christopher Nolan put into the direction of this last film (I still remember him being excited at the MTV Movie Awards when announcing the then still upcoming movie) it was dwarfed by the terrible theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, America.

Fourthly, and even though it might yet be presumptuous I hope Lindsay Lohan has been making her comeback this summer. Where do I start, she was just there in many a movie I liked as a child Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, Mean Girls… and I always thought she had it in her. Therefore, I’m hoping her upcoming movie about Liz Taylor (whom she also portrays), Liz and Dick, can be the start of something new because goodness knows she has had many a chance.

Fifthly, popular culture made a bang when on 21 February 5 members of the Russian feminist punk rock group, Pussy Riot, staged a performance in a Russian orthodox church. During that performance they ‘prayed’ for Russia to be saved from Putin. Even though the members were wearing balaclavas they were identified by the police. Three were sentenced to a prison camp but the other two are meant to have fled the country. This summer the story really made the press as the trial and conviction attracted international attention.

Finally, on a more personal note I am happy popular culture is there and it continues to brighten my path in surprising ways!

Bijzondere acteur

Populaire cultuur is iets dat eigenlijk nooit stil staat. De gezichten van een bepaald tijdperk zijn dan ook niet van elkaar los te koppelen, net zoals die van  Britney Spears, N’Sync en de Backstreet Boys in de muziekwereld van de jaren ’90. Daarenboven hebben we uiteraard acteurs, actrices, modellen, modeontwerpers en kunstenaars die het straatbeeld mee bepalen. Vandaar dat ik het ook geschikt vond om het te hebben over de alomtegenwoordige en bijzonder veelzijdige acteur, Ryan Gosling. 

                Hij werd op 12 november 1980 geboren in Canada. Zijn carrière begon, ook tot mijn verrassing, na een open auditie in 1993 bij de Micky Mouse Club.  Hiervoor verhuisde hij naar Orlando in Florida. Hier had hij bekende co-sterren zoals Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera en Justin Timberlake. Hij werd zelfs goede vrienden met Justin Timberlake want toen zijn moeder terug naar Canada moest verhuizen omwille van haar werk, werd de moeder van Justin Timberlake zijn legale voogd. Ze blijven tot op vandaag een goede verstandhouding hebben. Na zijn serieuzere rol in de thriller Murder by Numbers waar hij acteerde naast onze favoriete ‘girl next door’ Sandra Bullock en Michael Pitt, brak hij voor goed met zijn verleden in de jeugd televisie. 

                Ondanks het feit dat hij misschien geen typische ‘looks’ heeft, kan hij rekenen op heel wat bijval en heeft hij menige schone aan zijn arm gehad. Wat hem echter zo bijzonder maakt is het feit dat hij op een geloofwaardige manier overkomt in al zijn films, die op zijn minst uiteenlopend van genre genoemd kunnen worden. Zijn eerste, echt grote rol in een Hollywood productie was naast Rachel McAdams in 2004 in romantische film The Notebook naar de roman van Nicholas Sparks. Het werd onmiddellijk een voltreffer en bracht de populaire cultuur weer een tijdloze kusscène mee waarvoor het ook, destijds in 2005 op spectaculaire wijze, de MTV Movie Award won voor Best Kiss. Je voelt de chemie want hij won toen ook niet minder dan 4 Teen Choice Awards. Bovendien heeft de film tal van betekenisvolle 'quotes'.

Na deze prestatie heeft hij meer dan bewezen dat hij zijn naam verdiend heeft in Hollywood, naast de groten. Zo bracht hij Lars in Lars and the Real Girl (persoonlijk één van de leukste films die ik in lange tijd gezien had) met alle ingewikkelde gevoelens volledig tot zijn recht en het was niet iemand waar je medelijden mee had maar waar je echt met kon meeleven. Eén woord: wow! Daarnaast overtuigde hij in de warm onthaalde film Blue Valentine naast Michelle Williams. Dat hij ook een comedy rol aankan heeft hij dit jaar bewezen in Crazy Stupid Love. Echt wel een grappige film en leuk om naar te kijken. Onlangs in Drive en politiek drama The Ides of March naast George Clooney heeft hij nogmaals zijn publiek kunnen overtuigen. Qua acteertalent is hij dan ook moeilijk te overtreffen en is hij goed op weg de nieuwe ‘Hollywood golden boy’ te worden, voor zover hij dat nog niet is. Het is namelijk zeldzaam dat een acteur je zo kan meeslepen in een verhaal.

Omdat hij zo goed is in wat hij doet heeft hij ook die zogenaamde x-factor op het scherm. Zijn prestaties en zijn algehele zelfvertrouwen maken hem nog aantrekkelijker, zeker in Crazy Stupid Love waar de ‘Dirty Dancing move’ best wel grappig is. Nog iets voor Barney uit How I Met Your Mother ;) Zijn tof gezicht en leuk lichaam is voor de meisjes nog een extra troef J  Het komt erop neer dat , omwille van de bovengenoemde veelzijdigheid (er zijn weinig die de diversiteit van zijn films zouden aankunnen), hij een acteur is die in de smaak valt bij mannen zowel als bij vrouwen. Ik alvast ben een fan van hem en zijn werk en ik kijk alvast uit naar komende projecten!

Every shoe has its silver lining

As I have mentioned before the great thing about shoes is they always fit and you choose them to your taste, therefore something that can never disappoint. That is why I love every single one of my shoes. Moreover, they each have their own special story. Nevertheless, there is an exception to that always fitting. Recently when I was asked to take off my shoes at the airport security, on the way to a connecting flight, I ended up having to take off my boots. It comes down to the fact that it was really hard, considering my feet had swollen and the boots did not have a zipper or something. This was much to the enjoyment of the security men (it was not really a very busy time of the day). At least they said the boots were nice ;)

 Back to the silver lining. It seems that this summer shoes with a silver (or gold) tipped toe are going to be all the rage. With it pointy shoes are also back. Especially popular among celebrities at the moment, is the ‘merry go round’ collection by Louis Vuitton. Shoe guru, Christian Louboutin, has not let it pass him by either. You can of course also make this trend your own if you frequent stores like ZARA. Before we know it all shoe shops will probably have their own versions of the shoe J Moreover, you can also wear ballerinas in this trend. Either way, a silver/gold note to start the summer on.

Needless to say the high street stores will also be selling similar pumps this summer. After all, the price tags of the above mentioned can sometimes be overwhelming. Either way, happy feet this summer J
