Straighten Up

Who knew in 1994 that the television sitcom Friends would prove to be so noteworthy with regard to contemporary hair trends for women? How can we forget Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel, and her even more prominent hairdo. Her hairstyle was then a household standard and became known as ‘The Rachel’. Needless to say, there were several thousands of women sporting a ‘Rachel’ in the Friends high days. To this day Jennifer Aniston remains one of the most copied celebrities with regard to her appearance and she has definitely kept the ‘straight’ look up to date and timeless. Nevertheless, Courtney Cox (Monica) was not too shabby either J Moreover, let us not forget the countless celebrities and fashionista’s that are proud of their straight do, such as Victoria Beckham and America’s sweetheart Reese Witherspoon, to name a few. The great thing is that whether your hair is short or long, straight it has instant class.

The Rachel left and Jennifer Aniston has the straight hair look figured out right

Straight hair is still an all round popular style whether it be for the daily routine or, who knows, the odd red carpet event J Yet, it is not always easily attainable and for us as part of the modern generation some of the stories from history are actually hair raising. The earliest record of hair straightening is when a certain Erica Feldman used metal irons heated by fire to straighten her hair in 1872. Scary thought considering the countless products the hair industry provides these days to protect our hair against heat. The first prototype of the straightening iron most of us use today was invented by Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield in 1912.[1] Starting in the 90’s (my take on the matter) hair straightening broke through, largely thanks to Friends, and became immensely popular with ceramic and tourmaline straightening irons leading the pack.
This marks the first article with regard to hairstyles and there will be more to come as it has come to fascinate me through the years. Moreover, it is intriguing how popular culture can here too be a force to be dealt with. After all, who needs a crown when you have an amazing hairstyle as your second best accessory (your first being the person you are with). However, if you are having one of those inevitable bad hair days just let loose and choose a song to whip your hair to ;)
P.S. If you are looking to achieve this look just step into your nearest hairdresser (The Beguine salons do a great job here in Belgium. A friend and I are rarely disappointed ;). Nevertheless, it might become a costly affair so I am all for trying the look at home and the internet offers many tips. Just type hair straightening into google ;) You will find tips as to products you can use all depending on your hair type and length.
